You're right about the appeal of seeing something directly. I remember that looking at Saturn was actually a little eerie. Saturn was THERE. By itself. Doing its Saturnian thing. With no human input whatsoever.
As opposed to Pascal's silence of those infinite spaces, the thought of hurricanes on Jupiter or spinning rings around Saturn is what frightens me. The Great Red Spot may survive humankind.
